In 2017, famed oceanographer Walter Munk celebrated his 100th year.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of California San Diego celebrated Walter’s lifetime of achievements and the spirit that he embodied: the resolve to perform daring science, the foresight to educate future generations of scientists, and the sense of service that makes science an agent of societal advancement.
Walter’s colleagues marked the occasion with two scientific symposia:
- Two days of talks in May on Internal Wave Breaking, Turbulence, and Ocean Mixing and The Physics of the Oceanic Internal Wave Field.
- Two days of talks in August on Ocean Acoustics, National Security, and Walter Munk.
- Additional events were held in Walter’s birthday month, October, culminating in a Centennial Conversation with Walter Munk featuring His Serene Highness (H.S.H.) Prince Albert II of Monaco.
